KEEP SAN MARCOS BEAUTIFUL INTRODUCES ECO STATIONS
SAN MARCOS, Texas, Nov. 21, 2013 – The members of Keep San Marcos Beautiful announced the new waste bins they plan on using in parks and even the Sights and Sounds event to improve recycling.
To prevent people from misusing regular recycle bins, Solid Waste Program Coordinator Amy Kirwin suggested Eco Stations be used in parks and the Sights and Sounds event.
A total of 11 Eco Stations will be placed throughout the event. These Eco Stations will connect several bins for different kinds of recyclable waste.
During the Sights and Sounds event, volunteers will guide visitors and ensure these bins are used properly.
The Solid Waste Program encourages citizens of San Marcos to reduce the use of polystyrene products because they’re not easily recyclable. The program even went to the extent of banning polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam, from parks.
These restrictions will also apply in events held in parks and recreational areas in San Marcos.
“We are encouraging vendors (in Sights and Sounds) to use something compostable or recyclable to hand out their food on,” Kirwin said. “This year it is voluntary for them to have these kinds of products, but next year it will be mandatory.”
Although the restriction of Styrofoam products may affect the event vendors, it will definitely benefit the city of San Marcos and the Texas Disposal Systems that are in charge of collecting trash.
